F-N Art launches in the ‘ville!

Posted by chaska on March 5, 2010

Kenn Parks, From Madness to Release to Enlightenment

F-N Art Series Launch
THEME: Madness
The Vernon Club, 1575 Story Ave across from Hadley Pottery
$5 Cover
BVS Members are free, but must RSVP to be on the VIP list to ensure free entry

For those of you with art in your heart, the F-N Art monthly artists’ salon (minds out of the gutters, it just means Friendship and Art), offers a chance to mingle with other artists, art lovers and any one else who feels the desire to express themselves through art. The theme for the first F-N Art series is “Madness” and will be launched in March – see the connection? Clever, no? All forms of art are encouraged. And kudos must be given to my friend Carrie in Birmingham who introduced me the the F-N Art concept.

7:00 – 8:00 mingling & community art piece
8:00 – 9:00 performance pieces
9:00 – 11:00 Music by Tamara Dearing and Amanda Lucas

Vernon will also offer $1 bowling, so we will have the whole facility!

So, what is this F-N Art??

F-N Art was originally created in Birmingham, by my friend Carrie and several of her creative type friends. This isn’t about solely professional artists, but for all of us who would love to get together with other creative types and express ourselves, always over a common theme. The series launch starts with “Madness.”

Madness – what does that mean to you? For some it brings to mind sports and “March Madness,” for others it might bring to mind Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Tea Party, and even others a mental state. There are no limits. It’s up to you. Costumes as well as art are encouraged. If you don’t feel creative, feel free to bring in a piece of work created by someone else that may be inspirational to you.

I encourage all levels and all forms/mediums of art. Think of this as a modern day arts salon for sharing and mingling and finding an outlet for our creative juices. I also encourage anyone who is in Arts Therapy to use the themes with their students and encourage them to participate as well.

The flow of the evening is as follows:
7:00 – 8:00 mingling & community art piece
8:00 – 9:00 performance pieces
9:00 – 11:00 Music by Tamara Dearing and Amanda Lucas

Community Art:
BVS will provide various materials so that we can create a communal piece each month. Eventually, we hope to have a gallery setting to display work, but will always have a photo gallery at our online FB Group (in the making)

Performance Pieces:
From 8-9 we will share performance pieces, read a poem, do a short play, show your short film. All pieces are limited to no more than 10 min in length and require you to pre-register for a spot. Again, original pieces encouraged, but not required.

Starting at 9 it becomes a free for all with great music by local bands.

If I’ve missed something, let me know…
And by all means, share this event with your friends. The more the merrier.

Magic and Miracles – Miracle Fruit that is…

Posted by chaska on October 14, 2009

1108miraclesmSuspend your disbelief.

For one night only, your senses are under our control. A dry white wine now tastes like a sweet German Riesling. The card you put back in the deck is in your own hand. Bite into a fresh lemon for a burst of sweetness while a cut string magically knits itself back together.

It’s a night of magic and miracles.

For you, the Go Go Guerrilla Girls have boldly acquired a stash of West African Miracle Fruit* to share with our Army. We’re preparing a spread for you to sample both before and after. While the Miracle Fruit works its magic in your mouth, Darshwood the Conjuror will work his magic before your eyes. As if that’s not enough for one night, trust me when I say the setting itself will make the night that much more mystical.

$15 in advance
$25 at the door

Because we have a VERY limited stock, only advance RSVP’s will be guaranteed Miracle Fruit. You’re welcome to join us for good atmosphere and great company at the door, but you’ll be taking your chances on the Miracle Fruit.

May Supper Speakeasy featuring Miracle Fruit

Posted by chaska on May 5, 2009

The Before and After Dinner
A Taste Sensation that is like Night and Day

Where: As always, disclosed upon reservation
When: Monday, May 18 6:30pm
Cost: $75
price includes dinner, drinks, entertainment, tax and gratuity
RSVP: Please call 502-287-2772 to avoid additional service fees or feel free to use the LWE link below

BVS is happy to present a Louisville first – and quite possibly a national first – dinner, featuring the transformative effects of miracle fruit. When eaten, this West African berry drastically affects flavor perception. Sour becomes sweet, protein is enhanced and many foods develop depth and complexity. It is a culinary experience like no other. Our guest bartender/chef, Stephen Dennison from Z’s Fusion, will be offering cocktails/mocktails and cuisine inspired by the ever changing nature of the Universe. The meal will be served family style so guests may sample each dish before and after taking miracle fruit. The full range of the flavor spectrum will be explored, not unlike mans desires to conquer new frontiers. Major Tom, don your suit and join our foray into a one-of-a-kind dining experience.

Menu will include roughly 7-9 courses along with various cocktails. Check back after Wednesday for the menu update.

november events update

Posted by chaska on November 15, 2008

Just a quick update on our November activities. The cool seems to finally be settling in so winter must be on its way. In order to keep you nice and toasty, we created a couple events to warm the insides. We’ve partnered with Derby City Espresso for these cool months and have some great – and inexpensive – events planned for you.

Tuesday, November 18, 7pm
Tuesday Tastings – Beer 101
Derby City Espresso – led by Matt Landan
331 E. Market St
$10 includes all tastings plus light bites that will compliment our beverages of choice for the evening
Join us for our first class on beer. Learn the difference between ales and lagers and what falls into each category. We’ll try several different styles and learn about the basic of the brew. You will enjoy roughly 7 different styles, complimented by some light bites that will help cleanse the palate and fill the tummy. RSVP kindly appreciated.

Friday, November 21, 7pm – 9:30pm, happy hour style
Derby City Espresso – led by Jo Self
Miracle on Market St – Miracle Fruit Tasting
$10/members,   $15/non-members
If you missed the members’ only version, now’s your chance. We’ve (Stephen Dennison and myself) expanded the flavor sensation to include up to 50 different foods to try in order to experience the full effect of the Miracle Berry. RSVP prepaid is required for this event as purchase of berries and food is required. You’re welcome to just show up, but we cannot guarantee that there will be enough to go around without an advance RSVP. If you RSVP and can’t make it, 50% will be given to you as a credit toward your next event.

Tuesday, November 25 7pm
Derby City Espresso – led by Matt Landan
Tuesday Tastings – Coffee 101
$10 includes all tastings and tasty treats that compliment our beverage of the evening
Join us for an exploration of coffee. This first class will examine how brewing techniques can affect the flavor of the bean. We’ll taste: slow-drip, espresso, mochetto, french press just to give you an idea. RSVP kindly appreciated.

Thursday, November 27 5pm
Orphan’s Turkey Day
My house – Potluck style
This dinner is traditionally an opportunity to prepare that one dish you never get to eat or that you remember from your childhood – those turkey day favorites. I’ll prepare corn pudding and mashed sweet potatoes with crisp marshmallow topping – and if it comes to it, I’ll make the turkey as well. You bring whatever dish you’d like to share. I’ll provide the wine and soft drinks… BYOB otherwise. RSVP in the comments here and let us know what you’re bringing. I’ll share my address with those who RSVP. If you’re unable to cook or BYOB and small $ contribution would be appreciated.

  • Stay tuned for details on the Orphan’s Christmas Eve Dinner and cocktails – we’re going to enjoy a traditional Spanish Christmas dinner this year! Also, we’ll have more tastings at DCE…

miracle fruit tasting – sneak peek a success

Posted by chaska on November 13, 2008

1108miraclesm We had our first sneak peek tasting of Miracle Fruit the other night and had tons of fun trying all kinds of normal and not so normal fare with it. Stephen Dennison, a fantastic and edgy mixologist and chef here in Louisville was in attendance and we had a great time working through our tasting and taking notes. We hope to actually create a dinner around some of our findings and expand the tasting when we hold our public “taste tripping” party on November 21 at Derby City Espresso. Stay tuned for more details.

Click on the pic below for a larger view of the tasting notes.
