Derby Days…

Oh first Saturday in May. Joy. From hawkers that stand around Central Avenue, selling their wares or allowing car tire divots in their yards, to those that pass in their beautiful refinery, eating magnificent foods and drinking heavenly cocktails, enjoying an atmosphere like none other. My Old Kentucky Home indeed.

Building toward the next step…

Building toward the next incarnation of BVS is proving to be a beautiful adventure – one of which, I couldn’t be more excited. We’ll be announcing some of our feature contributors soon, but in the meantime, we’re still looking for a few good folks – writers, photographers, event organizers/caterers & ad sales – especially in the areas of Lexington and N. KY/Cincinnati. We’ll be doing our soft launch by the end of this month and then doing a full launch within a month to 6 weeks. Not only will we have amazing articles, but you’ll also find insider information, tips and tricks in our forum.

FOOD. COMMUNITY. CONNECTION. Bon Vivant Savant is evolving and we couldn’t be more excited. The website you are currently viewing will be changing – radically – in about four weeks. We’ll be posting an image of the new design, just a little temptation for you, just after Derby. And believe me, I think you’ll be excited too. Don’t worry though, our great dining events like the Supper Speakeasy and Wine & Wisdoms aren’t going anywhere. We’re still fully dedicated to our dining club members, but we’re also developing great in-home parties with BVS@Home as well as developing our website into a fully interactive online, lifestyle magazine that will focus not only on Kentuckiana, but will also grow to incorporate Lexington, Northern KY, Cincinnati and the surrounding regions. We’ll bring you the best our community has to offer: food, arts & entertainment, people – all in the vein of living well and living wisely!

Interested in contributing? We’ve got some great contributors lined up already (we’ll be announcing more after Derby), but we’d like to hear from you, our readers. We’re looking for great stories, photos or videos on local life – whatever that means for you.  Want to share your passion for art, music, food, your city, your job, your family, your volunteer work? We’re 2! Let’s celebrate with some fun incentives!

Bon Vivant is officially two years old! And we have lots of fun ways for you to share and celebrate with us.

Member Incentives:

  • Book any home party with us by June 15 and as the host, you enjoy the party for free! Party must be held by September 1 to qualify. Minimum of 10 people.
  • Attend any Dining Club Event, i.e. Speakeasys or Wine & Wisdoms, between now and the end of June and be entered to win a champagne hot air balloon ride for two. This trip is valued at $375. Drawing will be held during the Speakeasy on June 27th. Couples and singles are both considered one entry.
  • Join us for any Speakeasy from now through June and members pay only $125 for two people. That’s a savings of $25.

Not a member yet? That’s OK. We have great rates and now is the time to join. If you join us by May 1, you’ll be entered for the hot air balloon tip as well – which makes you also eligible for all the great incentives listed above!

Alright, I know I get excited about most of the dinner we here at BVS put together, but this one has a special place in my heart. Not only are we collaborating once again with the mad, creative genius of Stephen Dennison, but the location is one of my top 10 dream sites in Louisville to host a dinner. You truly won’t want to miss this one! And remember, if you’re not a member, you are able to attend one Supper Speakeasy. Once you’ve attended one, you need to become a member to attend future events.

WHAT: All courses will offer guests a choice for their actual dish. This is an adventure in dining where not all guests will received the same meal for each course – but you DO have control over which dish you select.

Life is an adventure, the grand painting produced over time and as personal as one’s fingerprint. Whether explored across the globe or in one’s own backyard the glory of the experience should be savored, as a great meal. We will be offering a five-course meal with appertif and digestif cocktails and paired with wines. As in life, the journey is finest when shared with companions, new and old. While the location can not yet be revealed, it is a long standing cultural and educational center for our fair city. From a dinner that surprises at every turn to the location of the event, this is one dinner you truly won’t want to miss!

1st special guest of honor announced: Specialist Troy Yocum of “Hike for our Heroes.” When Troy Yocum came home from Iraq, he had just one thing on his mind: hike 7000 miles across America while drumming to raise $5 million for Military Families. During our economic hard times one United States soldier is rallying Americans to help veterans. Starting during Thunder Over Louisville on April 17th, 2010, Iraq war veteran Troy will hike day after day for 16 months to spread the word that help is needed. With a great team backing him, he plans on drumming up support in more ways than one.

2010 Teasers…

Oh yeah, baby…you’ll definitely want to be reading our newsletter (if you’re not on it, you should sign up now)  to keep up with all the fantastic events and opportunities we have planned this year – from new partnerships, to new series and some seriously unique “one-off” events – well, there’s a ton of fun to be had! F-N Art

For those of you with art in your heart, the F-N Art quarterly event (minds out of the gutters, it just means Friendship and Art), offers a chance to mingle with other artists, art lovers and any one else who feels the desire to express themselves through art.  The theme for the first F-N Art series is “Madness” and will be launched in March – see the connection? Clever, no? All forms of art are encouraged. And kudos must be given to my friend Carrie in Birmingham who introduced me the the F-N Art concept.

Fleur de LIVE

Have you ever wanted to ask a musician a question but were afraid to hear yourself on the radio? Have you been to a live gig, heard a great song and wondered where the artist’s inspiration came from?  The Fleur De LIVE event will offer you a chance to see, hear and have a dialogue with local artists in an intimate, unplugged venue that encourages interaction and participation. Series debuts in July.


Think Gallery Hop but with live performances. The return of the Theatre Hop happens in May this year. Our 2nd (nearly) annual event features theatre companies from around the city giving short performances in non-traditional venues. Hop from gallery to bar to restaurant for a 2 hr revolving show clock and finish the evening with a late happy hour and cast party where you can meet the performers.


While we can’t reveal all the details just yet, I am excited to announce that BVS and LEO have joined forces to offer some spectacular events and experiential advertising options in celebration of LEO’s 20th Anniversary this year. Details to be revealed soon!

Many of you know my fascination and enjoyment experimenting with Miracle Fruit, but you may not realize my interest in exploring the health benefits (obesity, diabetes, chemotherapy patients) of the berries/tablets as well. BVS adds new mobile parties to its list o’ fun!

Three mobile wine tastings (all include 5-6 wines):
– It’s a Wonderful Wine
– New Wines for the New Year (wines you’ve probably haven’t heard of but should have)
– The Best of Bubbly

Mobile Mixology. Let Stephen Dennison come out and either teach you how to prepare the perfect cocktail or entertain you with his stories and vivid imagination as he pleases your thirsty palate. Options include:
– The Classic Cocktails
– Culinary Cocktails (featuring cocktails created for Anthony Bourdain and the Idea Festival)
– Before & After Cocktails w/ Light bites featuring Miracle Fruit – originally created for the Before and After Speakeasy in June of 2009

Pricing starts at $20 per person, but may be altered to include heavy hors d’doeuvres or a full dinner. Most tastings are recommended for up to 40 people, but can be arranged for larger groups with some adjustments.

You ask, we listen. New events for you to mingle and meet!

party_people So far our members come together for one reason – a shared experience over food and a unique setting. Members are married, single, wives who come with their friends when their husbands are out of town, 25-75, business people looking to entertain clients or employees in a memorable manner. If you like food, meeting new folks and having a great time unlike anywhere else that you can experience, then you’ve come to the right place.

In response to what some of our current members have asked, we’re creating a bit of a more structured schedule.

Already happening:
2nd Sunday Serenades at Le Gallo Rosso – great musicians in an intimate environment every 2nd Sunday afternoon

Guerrilla Networking at Le Gallo Rosso – meet unique professionals from around the area. Currently we’re meeting on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, but will soon move to a second lunch on the last Friday of the month and will rotate this location to different area neighborhoods.

Supper Speakeasys – OK, so these aren’t on a regular schedule, but they are monthly. We often try to keep these to a Sunday, Monday or Thursday night, but it really all depends on the hosting chef and location. Ah, isn’t that part of the fun?

Starting Soon:
2nd Wednesdays at Park Place @ Slugger Field
– We’ll rotate two of our popular events, the Nibble & Sip ‘Locavore’ Happy Hour and our Wine & Wisdoms at this beautiful and private location. Often we’ll enjoy the talents of owner Anoosh Shariat, and from time to time we’ll invite in a guest chef as well. Look for an announcement to our kick-off on November 11.

Wine & Cooking Classes – Look for these to start in the new year, 2010. Exact locations are pending, but classes will be available as a package or on a drop in basis. We will be partnering with 4 Flights Wine Boutique for the wine classes… so, stay tuned for details. Are you on our newsletter yet? You should be.

All memberships run annually from the time of purchase. See our ‘belonging’ page for details on the perks of joining.

1 person = $50 per year
2 people = $90 per year (join with your husband, boyfriend, best friend, co-worker, partner, etc)
3+ (up to 10) = $40 per person per year

Member News – Incentives and New Membership Rates

As a special incentive for our members, we are now offering savings when you bring a guest. Members will save anywhere from $5-10 for each guest, up to the cost of the event, when they bring a friend – which means you could come for free! And, members aren’t the only ones who benefit… each guest also saves when invited by a member.

As of August 2009, yearly membership is $50 per person. We also offer a discount when you join with a friend or group of friends. Those involved in the food community (restaurant owners/employees, Sullivan students/Professors, caterers, etc) are eligible for a special discount. Please inquire directly to discuss. Small businesses and organizations (alumni chapters, dining clubs, singles groups, etc) are eligible for group pricing as well, starting at $500/yr for up to 50 members. Larger organizations should contact us directly for pricing.

Membership entitles you to special pricing on events as well as insider info going on about Louisville and specials offered only to BVS members. A forum for members to connect is also in the works (it’s there, I’m just not quite happy with it yet) and will hopefully be up and running soon.
